Every path leaves a different story.
The Second Breath
Someone is breathing beside you. You live alone. Your estranged sister knows why it sounds like your mother.
Listen closely. Choose carefully. Carry the consequences.
You press play. Cutlery clinks. Your mother's radio murmurs in the background. Then two children start arguing about a birthday cake. Nora sits down hard. You reach to stop the tape, but she catches your wrist. Beneath the kitchen noise, a voice is rehearsing your mother's laugh. It gets closer each time. The recording jumps. Your mother is whispering now, telling someone to leave her children alone. A second voice repeats her words a breath later. It has learned the whisper too. Nora stops the cassette. She remembers this part: Mom played the kitchen tapes after Dad left. Something in the empty room began answering. When she finally stopped listening, it followed the recordings instead. The recorder's red light brightens under your thumb. You remove the cassette. From the staircase comes the soft scrape of a chair being pulled out for you.
