Ruth met Dave before dawn at a diner without Atlas glassware. The independent committee had authorized preservation of vendor records. Outside accountants would examine them under counsel's supervision. Dave agreed to recuse himself from decisions about anyone close to him. He did not yet know how much that sentence would cost.
By afternoon, someone had learned that preservation was coming. Claire called David's contractor number. Grant had ordered campaign samples destroyed at the records annex and told her to certify the disposal. She had refused. Now she was waiting for Ruth beside the sealed archive cages.
If I don't call back, check whether finance can expense a missing strategist.
She was trying to be funny. Dave heard the effort. He called Ruth, then Luis, and went to the annex's public loading entrance. Claire met him with a numbered carton of original campaign proofs. She had signed it out using her own badge before the destruction order could be processed.
As Luis reached the loading desk, the corridor lights died. A metal security shutter began descending between the archive and the entrance. Claire shoved the carton through to Luis. Dave pulled her away from the moving edge. The shutter struck concrete with a sound that traveled up his teeth.
Please tell me that's a scheduled test.
Emergency strips came on. There was no fire. Their ordinary exit had been electronically locked. Dave called building security and emergency services, giving their exact location rather than playing hero with the panel. The dispatcher told them to find the marked mechanical exit.
Through the wire glass, a man hurried away wearing a dark coat. A distinctive square gold cufflink flashed when he reached for the stair door. Dave knew those cufflinks. He had given them to Robert for thirty years at Atlas.
Claire followed his gaze, but did not speculate. They moved together toward the emergency stair. A stack of freestanding display frames blocked the crash bar. Dave braced the frames while she shifted them one at a time. His hand slipped; metal cut his palm. She wrapped it with her scarf and kept going.
The door opened onto cold daylight. Luis was outside with security and the evidence carton. Sirens approached. Claire leaned against Dave for one trembling breath, then straightened.
Somebody tried very hard to make paper go away. I think we should let the paper speak.
