Luis Ortega did not look impressed when Dave asked for help. He pointed to the mop first. Dave had left a wet streak across an electrical threshold. Before discovering corporate corruption, apparently, he would learn to wring a bucket.
People work here after you go home. Try keeping them alive.
Dave apologized and corrected it. Luis waited until he finished before taking a ring of keys from his pocket. The locked disposal bins were collected on Wednesdays. The facilities office recorded every transfer because a previous contractor had once thrown away a tenant's lease.
Together they opened the marketing bin under the contractor's documented handling procedure. Luis signed as witness. Dave photographed the invoice where it lay, preserving its location and date, then placed it in an evidence envelope Ruth had supplied. He did not take anyone's personnel documents or touch the unrelated contents.
The vendor was Northline Creative Services. Its account number matched the duplicate payments in the anonymous warning. On the back, someone had written: release after R.H. approval. Atlas's chief operating officer was Robert Hale. To Dave, he had always been Uncle Rob.
That initial could mean anybody. Don't start deciding what it means before you know.
Dave nodded. Robert had taught him to drive in an empty warehouse lot. He had sat beside Dave through his father's last night in the hospital. A pair of letters was not a conviction. It still made the room feel colder.
Luis showed him something else: cleaning contractors' overtime requests, all denied during the same months Northline's invoices doubled. His crew had been buying their own gloves.
Why didn't this reach my office?
I sent it there. Your office isn't the same thing as you reading it.
There was no comforting answer. Dave wrote down the amounts and gave Luis Ruth's direct number, asking him to share only what he chose to share. Then he logged the Northline material with her. She confirmed receipt without discussing the case on the work phone.
Outside marketing, Claire was sitting on the floor beside her cardboard city, repairing its broken bridge with tape. Dave knelt to hold the pieces level. She noticed the careful new way he handled the bucket.
Promotion already?
I've been trusted with water.
She laughed and handed him the tape. For several quiet minutes he held a tiny bridge together while she made it strong enough to stand.
